New Zealand secured a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy final with a 50-run victory over South Africa in the second semi-final at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. A dominant batting display, led by centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson, set up the win, while captain Mitchell Santner’s all-round brilliance ensured the Black Caps successfully defended their 362-run total.
Ravindra and Williamson lead the charge
Batting first, New Zealand put up a formidable 362/6 on the back of stellar performances from Ravindra and Williamson, both of whom notched up centuries. Their record-breaking partnership laid a solid foundation before late fireworks from Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell provided the finishing touches.
Santner leads by example with the ball
In the second innings, New Zealand’s bowlers kept the pressure on the Proteas. Skipper Mitchell Santner led from the front, picking up three crucial wickets, including the dismissals of Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, both of whom had scored fighting fifties. Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips chipped in with two wickets each, further denting South Africa’s chase.
Miller’s valiant century in vain
David Miller fought a lone battle for South Africa, smashing an unbeaten century, but the lack of support from the other end proved costly. Despite Bavuma’s 56 and Van der Dussen’s 69, the Proteas fell short, managing only 312 in their chase.
New Zealand’s fielding makes the difference
Apart from their efforts with bat and ball, New Zealand’s fielding was a game-changer. Tom Latham’s sharp wicket-keeping and the Kiwis electric presence in the field helped turn the tide in their favor. New Zealand will now play the final against India at the Dubai International Stadium on 9 March. India won the semi-final against Australia on Tuesday.
