The BCCI is reportedly keen to bring back MS Dhoni as Team India’s mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The former India captain, who previously took up the role during the 2021 edition of the tournament, has once again been approached with an offer to guide the squad. However, the big question is whether current head coach Gautam Gambhir would be comfortable working alongside Dhoni.

According to reports, Dhoni’s mentorship is seen as a potential game-changer for the Indian team, especially with his unparalleled experience in leading India to three ICC titles. Yet, sources suggest Dhoni may not accept the role, primarily due to his complex dynamic with Gambhir, dating back to their playing days.

Adding to the intrigue, Gambhir himself recently addressed questions about his relationship with Dhoni. In a commentary during a public event, the former India opener said: “People try to create stories between me and MS. The truth is, I’ve always respected him for what he has achieved. That doesn’t mean I have to agree with everything he says or does. We had our differences, but that’s part of professional cricket.”

While Gambhir acknowledged Dhoni’s stature, his words also made it clear that mutual respect does not necessarily erase past differences. This makes the idea of both working together in the same dressing room even more complicated.

Dhoni, who is speculated to retire after IPL 2026, is unlikely to take on the role, though the BCCI’s offer signals the board’s desire to have his influence in a high-pressure tournament. With more than four months left for the World Cup, the ball now lies in Dhoni’s court — and equally, in whether Gambhir approves of his involvement.
