As the World Test Championship final at The Oval reaches a thrilling climax, the focus remains on the contentious catch that led to the dismissal of Shubman Gill and sparked a social media storm. With Virat Kohli still at the crease and India within reach of a historic chase, the controversial catch by Cameron Green has become a talking point ahead of the final day.

The incident occurred in the eighth over of India’s chase when Gill edged a delivery from Scott Boland to Green at gully. The Australian all-rounder made a diving catch to his left, completing a stunning grab. However, Gill remained at the crease, prompting the umpire to refer the decision to the TV umpire. Despite viral visuals suggesting the ball may have touched the ground, the TV umpire ruled the catch legitimate.

Expressing his disappointment, Gill took to social media after the day’s play, sharing a picture of Green’s catch along with magnifying glass emojis, sarcastically targeting the umpires. The incident ignited a raging debate on social media, dividing the cricketing world.

In response to the controversy, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla urged everyone to accept the decision of the third umpire and avoid creating further disputes. While indirectly addressing Gill’s post, Shukla emphasized the importance of respecting the umpire’s call.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla gave his take in an interaction with ANI. In an indirect message to Gill, he said: “We should not create a dispute over this. We should accept the decision of the Third umpire.”

Meanwhile, Shukla maintained optimism about India’s chances of achieving a historic victory on the final day. With 280 runs required and seven wickets in hand, he expressed confidence in the batting abilities of Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli. Shukla highlighted that if the team plays cautiously, the target is achievable, considering it is not an insurmountable total.
