The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
The decision was confirmed by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, who stated that the board issued the directive following recent developments and growing public and political pressure. While the BCCI had earlier adopted a “wait and watch” approach, the board decided to act in view of the evolving situation.
“Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad,” Saikia told news agency ANI. He added that the BCCI would allow KKR to seek a replacement player if required.
Mustafizur had emerged as a key talking point after KKR secured him for Rs 9.20 crore at the December auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. His signing was seen as a major addition to KKR’s bowling unit for the upcoming season.
Impact on KKR’s IPL 2026 plans
The directive represents a significant setback for KKR’s squad planning. The franchise had invested heavily in Mustafizur, viewing him as a specialist option for the death overs, particularly suited to Indian conditions. His release leaves KKR with a gap in their overseas bowling resources just months before the season begins.
KKR had structured their overseas combination around a core group that included established international players, with Mustafizur expected to play a key role in the bowling attack. With his exit, the franchise may now need to reassess its balance and rely more on domestic fast bowlers or explore alternative overseas options.
From a financial standpoint, clarity is still awaited on whether the Rs 9.20 crore spent on Mustafizur will be credited back to KKR’s auction purse. While the BCCI has confirmed that a replacement will be permitted, no official communication has yet been issued regarding fund adjustments.
The development adds an unexpected layer of complexity to KKR’s preparations for IPL 2026, with the franchise now awaiting further guidance from the IPL Governing Council.
