Cricket relations between Bangladesh and India could move towards a reset after months of strain. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, expressing its intent to restore bilateral ties.

The relationship had deteriorated during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, with cricketing links affected alongside wider issues. One flashpoint came when Mustafizur Rahman had his IPL deal ended by Kolkata Knight Riders, which triggered a strong response from Bangladesh.

World Cup withdrawal and series disruption

In protest over the Mustafizur issue and wider concerns around IPL participation, Bangladesh pulled out of a recent T20 World Cup held in India. The decision escalated tensions and marked a low point, with bilateral cricket effectively put on hold.

A separate series involving Cricket Ireland was also affected. “It was originally scheduled in September. But when India’s tour was postponed to September, we asked Cricket Ireland if they could arrange the series in another possible window in 2026,” a BCB official said.

Government stance key as future tours remain uncertain

The BCB’s letter refers to past cooperation and also mentions India’s postponed tour of Bangladesh, which had already been delayed due to scheduling pressure. After recent tensions, that tour remains uncertain but is now part of ongoing discussions.

Future tournaments could also be affected. Bangladesh is due to host the Asia Cup next year, but India’s participation is not guaranteed. If India opts out, the event may need to shift to a neutral venue.

A BCCI official confirmed the letter had been received but said any decision would depend on clearance from the Indian government. Bilateral cricket between the two sides continues to follow political direction.

The change in leadership in Bangladesh under Tarique Rahman has prompted efforts to reopen dialogue. Sports minister Animul Haque has begun discussions aimed at easing tensions and restoring ties.

Despite the recent issues, the International Cricket Council has not taken any action against Bangladesh and continues to treat it as a regular host for future events.
