India got a crucial breakthrough in the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as Washington Sundar struck to dismiss Matthew Short for 30 off 41 balls, thanks to an exceptional catch from Virat Kohli.
The dismissal came in the 23rd over of Australia’s innings when Sundar, who had been keeping things tight in tandem with Axar Patel, delivered a flighted delivery that tempted Short into a drive. However, Short couldn’t keep it down, and Kohli, stationed at short cover, dived forward to complete a brilliant low catch, showcasing sharp reflexes and anticipation.
With this wicket, Australia slipped to 124/3 in 22.3 overs, losing momentum after a brisk start from the top order. The dismissal also marked Sundar’s first scalp of the match, continuing his disciplined spell alongside Axar, who had earlier struck to remove a set batter.
Short, who had earlier survived a run-out scare after a mix-up, managed two boundaries in his innings but couldn’t convert his start into a big score. Kohli’s athletic effort not only lifted India’s fielding energy but also handed them control in the middle overs.
At the time of his dismissal, Alex Carey had just arrived at the crease, with Matt Renshaw at the other end, as Australia looked to rebuild following the double blow.
