“The chat I had with the coach and selector was very simple — runs weren’t coming from my bat, and form isn’t there. This is an important match, and we need players in form,” Rohit shared. “Collectively, the batters are not in form, so you can’t carry too many out-of-form players. That’s why I felt I should step aside.”
Rohit emphasized that the decision was a selfless one, aimed at prioritizing the team’s success over personal aspirations. “For me, it was a difficult decision, but it was also a sensible one. I didn’t want to think too far ahead. The only thought was what the team needs at this point,” he added.
Rohit’s decision comes on the back of a poor run in the series, where he has managed only 31 runs in five innings. Following India’s collapse in the previous Test in Melbourne, where the team lost seven wickets for just 34 runs, the pressure to turn things around in Sydney became crucial.
“This decision wasn’t about retirement or stepping away from the game permanently. It was about accepting reality — that I’m not scoring runs right now,” Rohit clarified. “I believe things will change, and I’ll be back to contributing to the team.”
Rohit also addressed the criticism he has faced, saying, “People with a mic, laptop, or pen don’t change our lives. They can’t decide when we go or when we play. I’ve played this game for so long, and I know what’s best for the team and myself.”
Rohit reiterated his commitment to the team’s success. “Since 2007, my goal has always been to win games for my team. If you don’t think of the team, then there’s no point. Cricket is a team sport, and decisions should always reflect that.”
While Rohit’s absence is a significant blow to India, his decision to step aside underlines his self-awareness and leadership qualities. As India battles to level the series in Sydney, Rohit’s candid reflections serve as a reminder of the sacrifices players make in the best interests of the team.
