Following India’s convincing win over Australia in the 3rd ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), rumors started swirling about whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had played their last One-Day International series.
The speculation came after both superstars hinted during their post-match interview that this might be their “last time playing in Australia.” However, despite the emotional undertone, neither Kohli nor Rohit announced their ODI retirement. The two legends refrained from making any official statements about stepping away from the format.
As of now, ODIs remain the only international format both Kohli and Rohit continue to represent India in. Kohli retired from T20Is after the 2024 World Cup, and Rohit also stepped away from the shortest format earlier this year. Their comments were thus interpreted by fans as a possible hint at winding down their international journeys, particularly overseas tours.
During the rare joint interview with Adam Gilchrist and Ravi Shastri, when asked about the 2027 ODI World Cup, Kohli smiled, gently tapped Rohit’s back, and avoided answering, while Rohit grinned as the discussion ended amid loud cheers from the SCG crowd.
For now, there’s no official retirement confirmation, but their words have certainly left fans emotional — signaling that while this may not be the end, the twilight of a golden era in Indian cricket might not be too far away.
