A worrying injury scare for Australia’s Michael Neser capped off a dramatic end to Day 2 of the fifth Ashes Test, as rain and bad light brought proceedings to a halt with the match finely balanced.

The moment of concern came late in the day when Neser was struck painfully on his right forearm — his bowling arm — while batting. Facing Ben Stokes, Neser attempted to defend a short-of-a-length delivery from the crease, only for the ball to rear up sharply and hit him around the elbow region. Clearly in discomfort, Neser immediately dropped his bat and signalled for medical attention, prompting the physio to rush out to the middle.

The injury appeared serious enough to raise concerns, particularly given it involved his bowling arm. As Neser received treatment, light drizzle began to fall, and soon after, the covers were brought on, officially bringing an end to play for the day.

Earlier, Australia’s fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland set the tone in the opening hour, each picking up a wicket with disciplined, probing spells. England, however, found some resistance through Jamie Smith, who rode his luck on several occasions and counterattacked to reach 46. His innings eventually ended when he holed out in the deep, caught off the bowling of Marnus Labuschagne.

With weather intervening and Neser’s fitness now a point of concern heading into Day 3, the fifth Test remains delicately poised. Australia will be hoping the injury is not serious, as Neser’s availability could play a crucial role in the remainder of the match.
