Australia made a rare selection call in the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, leaving out senior off-spinner Nathan Lyon from their playing XI. This is only the second time in his career that Lyon has not featured in a home Test match.

The previous instance dates back 12 years, when Australia left him out against India at the WACA in January 2012. Since then, Lyon has been one of the most consistent selections in the Australian Test setup, especially on home soil, where conditions often assist his high-bounce off-spin.

With this being a pink-ball Test, Australia opted for an extra seamer, bringing in Michael Neser, while relying on part-timers for spin duties. The decision aligns with the expectation of more seam movement under lights and less need for a frontline spinner on a Gabba pitch traditionally favouring fast bowlers.

Lyon’s omission underscores the tactical shift Australia has adopted for this Test — prioritising pace over experience as they look to defend their stronghold at the Gabba.
