Vodafone Idea confirmed plans to launch 5G services in India within the second half of 2024, adding to the already competitive telecom landscape. The company will have to rival Airtel and Jio, which have already taken a large market share. Akshaya Moondra, Vodafones’s Chief Executive, hinted at these plans during the company’s third-quarter earnings call in 2023.

Many Industries Will Benefit

5 G’s popularity is set to bring numerous benefits to several industries, especially digital entertainment. This network offers faster speeds, reduced latency, and increased connectivity, which are essential in enhancing consumers’ experience in online entertainment.

In entertainment spaces like iGaming, more so online casinos, we have seen developers creating games with high-tech features and visuals that need faster speeds to load. A good example is online slot games, where developers include immersive graphics in different categories, including classic and contemporary innovations, to appeal to diverse tastes. Offering speeds of 100 times more than 4G, 5G is set to enhance gameplay, as there are little to no delays.

The company’s CEO indicated that the rollout plan for the network would be released after fundraising talks with technology partners were done. Vodafone had focused on streamlining its services by closing down 3G offerings in places like Mumbai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, etc. They project to have finished switching off the 3G network by 2025.

Vodafone is Aware of Competitors’ Strides

Moondra supposed that their competitors, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, had already made significant strides in the Indian market. He noted that the companies had made substantial investments despite monetization having yet to happen.

Bharti Airtel has distributed the network in 5,000 towns and 20,000 villages, reaching over 50 million unique users. The company uses Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung’s equipment to offer the 5G services. It has previously acquired 19800 MHz of spectrum in 900 MHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz, 3.3 GHz, and 26 GHz bands and offers the network through 5G NSA architecture.

Jio adopted 5G standalone architecture in October 2022 and has already spread its services to approximately 7,764 cities across India. It is the only operator in India that uses the 700 MHz band. The company has shown undying efforts to dominate the market with its intention to acquire the 5G network gear from Ericsson.

All these companies are competing to have a share within India’s market, which had the number of 5G capable devices increasing over 55 times between 2022 and 2023. Growing at this rate, GSMA Intelligence predicts that 5G might contribute $455 billion to the country’s GDP by 2040.

Device Testing Already Done

Vodafone Idea’s yearly report highlighted that it had finished testing devices from all major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for its forthcoming 5G mobile network. They collaborated with several original OEMs to assess the compatibility of 5G handsets in Delhi and Pune using the 26 GHz and 3.3 GHz bands. During the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023, Kumar Mangalam Birla, one of Vodafone’s controllers, mentioned that the company had already prepared the core network for upcoming deployments.
