Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause flu-like symptoms ranging from mild to severe. It spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, or respiratory droplets. The virus is most active during the winter and early spring months.
Key Symptoms of HMPV
Mild symptoms:
- Cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Fever
Severe symptoms (in some cases):
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- Hoarseness
- Pneumonia
- Aggravation of asthma
Who Is at Risk?
HMPV poses the highest risk to:
- Children under five years old
- Elderly individuals
- People with weakened immune systems
Children under one year of age are particularly vulnerable, with 5-16% of cases potentially progressing to lower respiratory tract infections like pneumonia.
Recent Detection in Bengaluru
An eight-month-old child in Bengaluru is suspected to have contracted HMPV. The case was detected at a private hospital and reported to health authorities. While the Karnataka Health Department has yet to verify the results, they acknowledge the credibility of the private hospital’s testing procedures.
Health Advisory
Though there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, most cases resolve with rest and hydration. Severe cases may require hospitalization and supportive treatments like oxygen therapy. Health experts advise individuals, particularly those at high risk, to take precautions during peak seasons.
