The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy (RE) journey, with the total installed capacity reaching 209.44 GW by December 2024. This marks an impressive 15.84% year-on-year growth compared to 180.80 GW in December 2023.
Key Highlights:
- Record Capacity Addition:
- India added 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2024, a 119.46% increase from the 13.05 GW added in 2023.
- Solar Energy:
- Solar power led the growth, with an addition of 24.54 GW, pushing its total installed capacity to 97.86 GW. This represents a 33.47% increase from 73.32 GW in 2023.
- Wind Energy:
- Wind energy capacity rose to 48.16 GW, with an addition of 3.42 GW, reflecting a 7.64% growth year-on-year.
- Bioenergy and Small Hydro:
- Bioenergy capacity grew by 4.7%, reaching 11.35 GW, while small hydro projects increased by 2.2% to 5.10 GW.
Vision for 2030
The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, reiterated India’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, in line with the ‘Panchamrit’ climate goals announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
