The Supreme Court will hear review petitions by ministers of six opposition-ruled states on the matter of its decision to permit the centre to conduct JEE and NEET. The apex court had on August 17 ruled that the examinations would be conducted as it cannot jeopardize the future of students and had refused to postpone the exams any further as it had already been postponed twice before.

However on August 28, Chief Ministers of six opposition-ruled states – Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Maharashtra – approached the court asking for a review of its decision.

Many students and states have come against the decision to hold these examinations during a pandemic situation stating dangers related to health as well as other issues such as commutation and difficulties faced due to floods, lockdown etc. in certain parts of the country.

It is in this regard that the ministers have opted to go for another review petion.

“It is our duty to ensure a safe environment for all our students,” Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had tweeted.

Maharashtra Minister Aditya Thackeray had also sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he said cancellation of exams would prevent a spike in infections and had tweeted the same.
