Google and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) have joined forces to revolutionize accessible education in India through YouTube. Announcing the initiative in a blog post, Jonathan Katzman, Director of Product Management for YouTube Learning, emphasized, “Learning has always been central to YouTube. In India, where accessible education is key to unlocking the nation’s potential, YouTube can play a crucial role in making learning content more accessible through innovative partnerships, tools, and resources.”

As part of this collaboration, NCERT will launch YouTube channels for grades 1 to 12, delivering educational content in 29 Indian languages, including Indian Sign Language. This multilingual approach ensures that students across diverse regions and linguistic backgrounds can benefit, making education truly inclusive and accessible.

Google and NPTEL introduce AI-powered learning tools on YouTube

In addition to its collaboration with NCERT, Google has partnered with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) to bring credentialed courses to YouTube. These courses span a wide array of subjects, including pure sciences, rocket propulsion, and sports psychology, offering learners outside the IIT system a unique opportunity to engage with top-tier academic content.

Katzman elaborated on the initiative, stating, “This initiative creates a pathway for anyone outside the IIT system to take courses on NPTEL’s YouTube channels, complete the certification on the NPTEL-SWAYAM portal, and receive a certificate from the IITs.” More courses are expected to launch in the coming months.

The partnership also incorporates AI-powered features that enhance the learning experience. According to Katzman, “By using AI, we identify the concepts presented in a video and provide definitions from the web for those concepts, spanning subjects like biology, physics, and chemistry. We pull definitions and images from Google’s Knowledge Graph, relying on the video’s transcript and other related metadata.”
