In a major parallel development, the Defence Ministry will formally sign a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) this afternoon for the procurement of 97 Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets worth ₹67,000 crore. The acquisition proposal had been approved earlier by the Cabinet Committee on Security in August 2025, and today marks the finalisation of the commercial agreement.
This will be HAL’s second big Tejas deal after February 2021, when the Defence Ministry signed a ₹47,000 crore contract for 83 jets. The new order not only boosts HAL’s order book but also strengthens India’s indigenous defence manufacturing drive under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
