On March 6, 2024, the Indian Navy plans to commission Naval Detachment Minicoy as INS Jatayu, a major step towards strengthening security infrastructure at the strategically critical Lakshadweep Islands. Admiral R. Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, will preside over the ceremony, which represents a significant turning point in the Navy’s strategy to gradually strengthen its influence in the area.
Located on Minicoy, the southernmost island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, Naval Detachment Minicoy was founded in the early 1980s and is operated under the operational supervision of the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep). This location is critical for marine operations since it strategically crosses the important Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs).
The strategic choice to commission INS Jatayu was made to strengthen the Indian Navy’s overall operating capability in the Lakshadweep Islands. With the resources and infrastructure it needs, this autonomous naval force will greatly expand the Navy’s operational reach in the area. This action is consistent with the government’s emphasis on the all-encompassing development of islands, guaranteeing their safety and welfare.
The recently established naval facility will be crucial in countering threats to maritime security in the Western Arabian Sea by participating in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations. It establishes the Indian Navy as the area’s first responder, able to handle situations quickly and skillfully. Additionally, INS Jatayu would bolster the Navy’s capacity to address changing challenges in the maritime realm by enabling better connectivity with the mainland.
INS Jatayu joins the ranks of INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti as the second naval base in Lakshadweep. INS Jatayu’s commissioning has put the Indian Navy in a strong position to establish itself in the Lakshadweep islands. The facility will usher in a new age of capacity building and comprehensive development for the island territories by expanding operational surveillance and improving reach and sustenance capabilities.
