Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has selected SAFHAL Helicopter Engines to develop and produce “Aravalli” engines for India’s upcoming Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH) platforms. The airframer contract was signed on August 30, 2024, in Bengaluru.
SAFHAL, a joint venture between Safran Helicopter Engines SAS and HAL, will design, develop, manufacture, and support these new generation high-power engines. The Aravalli engines are intended for the 13-ton medium lift class helicopters being developed by HAL.
This collaboration aims to enhance India’s self-reliance in critical engine technologies for the aerospace and defense sector. The project builds on a 25-year partnership between Safran and HAL, with potential future applications in civil markets for offshore operations, utility, and VVIP transport.
The IMRH is designed to meet Indian Armed Forces requirements, while the DBMRH is a naval variant for the Indian Navy. Both helicopters are expected to operate in diverse and challenging environments.
