The iconic Air India building in Mumbai, originally situated on land owned by the state, has been transferred to the Maharashtra state government in a deal worth Rs 1,601 crore. The sea-facing high-rise was designed by renowned American architect John Burgee and his firm Johnson/Burgee, pioneers of the postmodern style.
Maharashtra government has agreed to waive DIPAM dues of Rs 298.42 crore. With ownership reverting to the state, one of Mumbai’s most famous architectural structures will now come under local control. The building, constructed nearly five decades ago, has been a familiar sight along the coastline for generations.
The iconic building is shifting from central to state authority in a multi-faceted deal. While its visual presence along the waterfront will remain unchanged, governance of the structure is being handed over from New Delhi to the local Maharashtra administration.
