Washington state is set to join Texas in mandating the use of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for electric vehicle (EV) charging companies participating in a state program to electrify highways using federal funds.

This move aligns with Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s goal of establishing NACS as the national charging technology.

General Motors, Ford, and Rivian have expressed their support for NACS, diverging from the Biden administration’s efforts to make the Combined Charging System (CCS) the dominant standard in the United States.

Tonia Buell, an official from Washington State’s Department of Transportation, welcomes the shift towards a unified standard and intends to require NACS at state and federally-funded charging sites.

The decision aims to future-proof investments and ensure compatibility with multiple EV models. While no final decision has been made, Washington’s plan could influence other states and the federal government to adopt NACS.
