Kia has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle market by commencing production of the EV9 electric SUV in Georgia. This move not only marks a milestone as the first EV assembled in the state but also promises to create more job opportunities in the U.S. Additionally, it spells good news for prospective buyers, as the well-priced electric SUV is set to become even more affordable.
The decision to shift production of the EV9 from Korea to Georgia carries a tangible benefit for consumers: eligibility for the federal EV tax credit. This results in a substantial price reduction of $7,500, making the EV9 even more attractive in terms of affordability.
So, what’s the bottom line? Assuming pricing for the 2025 model aligns with that of its predecessor, the base EV9 Light RWD will start at $48,895 after factoring in the tax credit. This represents a significant decrease from the previous $56,395 price tag, including the destination fee. Customers may opt for the Light Long Range RWD model, priced at $53,195, offering an extended range of 304 miles compared to the previous 230 miles. Alternatively, the Wind e-AWD model, now priced at $57,895, provides a range of 280 miles.
While these figures are based on the 2024 model, actual pricing for the 2025 model may vary slightly. However, with local production eliminating the need for importation, further price reductions could be on the horizon.
Having reviewed the 2024 Kia EV9 GT-Line previously, I can attest to its appeal. Boasting a modern interior, impressive tech features, and agile performance, it stands out among its electric SUV counterparts. With three rows of seating and competitive pricing, it’s poised to become a top choice for families transitioning to electric vehicles.
Despite upcoming competition from vehicles like Hyundai’s large electric SUV and the anticipated Hyundai Ioniq 9, the EV9’s affordability remains a key selling point for U.S. buyers. Set to hit the market later this year, the 2025 EV9 is anticipated to introduce further enhancements, including the North American Charging System (NACS) charging port and the addition of a superfast Kia EV9 GT trim.
Overall, Kia’s efforts to make electric vehicles more accessible are commendable, and the EV9’s evolution promises an exciting future for electric mobility.
