On June 30, Tata Motors Ltd. announced that it has bagged an order to supply state-owned Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) with 15 hydrogen-based fuel buses.
In the month of December, 2020, the IOCL had invited bids for the hydrogen-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell buses.
India’s biggest automobile manufacturing company will have 144 weeks from the date of signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the delivery of all 15 buses.
Additionally, the auto major would be collaborating with the Research & Development Centre of IOCL to further study Fuel Cell technology’s potential in commercial vehicles.
The company stated, this will be done by jointly testing, maintaining and operating these buses for public transport in real-world conditions in Delhi-NCR.” It added, “The buses will be refuelled by hydrogen, generated and dispensed by IOCL.
The President of Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors Girish Wagh informed that the company has supplied 215 EV buses under FAME I successfully along with attaining orders for 600 EV buses under FAME II.
Moreover, the order is to provide PEM Fuel Cell buses from a company as respected as the IOCL. It further encourages the auto major’s ongoing efforts to develop India-focused alternative sustainable fuels on transforming the future of mobility in the country.
Government-run IOCL’s Chairman SM Vaidya said that the corporation has been pioneering the national efforts towards assisting in the hydrogen economy for multiple applications which includes mobility as well.
