The next-generation S-Class and EQS sedans will be unified and released under a single moniker, instead of two distinct models. The change will help lessen the difference between the ICE and EV variants, allowing the automaker to address the models’ declining sales.
The forthcoming S-Class, which is scheduled to launch in 2030, will come with an ICE and an EV powertrains. CEO Ola Källenius states that the EQS name, which debuted with the company’s flagship electric car in 2021, will be taken out entirely. “There will be two S-Classes in the future – ICE and electric,” he told Autocar UK, adding that both models will have similar external and interior designs.
The ICE and EV variants are likely to be based on distinct platforms even if their designs are the same. The next generation EQE and the electric S-Class will probably be based on Mercedes’ MB.EA Large EV platform. The updated MRA platform, however, will serve as the base for the S-Class ICE.
The S-Class is now priced between Rs 1.77 crore and Rs 1.86 crore, while the Mercedes EQS is priced at Rs 1.62 crore. Mercedes also provides an SUV version of the EQS in other markets and it is expected to be launched in India on September 5 in a Maybach avatar.
