At last, BMW has unveiled the brand-new 2025 BMW M5. Unsurprisingly, it has an electrified powertrain, but some of the figures, notably its weight, will surprise many. Remarkably different from its V8-only predecessor, the seventh-generation BMW M5 is now a fully fledged plug-in hybrid electric car (PHEV). It is far more powerful than the previous M5, bigger in every way and set to go into production in July before coming on sale globally at the end of this year.

From a style and design viewpoint, the new M5 enhances the already aggressive feature of the current generation 5 Series. The huge kidney grille is partially closed and has a glossy black finish with illuminated surrounds. The front bumper has been modified with larger air intakes and the front and rear tracks are wider.

The new M5 comes standard with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, a small lip spoiler on the boot lid and a restyled rear bumper holding a diffuser and quad tailpipes for the sports exhaust system.

The new M5’s powertrain is basically the same as the BMW XM’s. The engine is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 that revs to 7,200 rpm and produces a maximum of 577 bhp and 750 Nm of torque. However, this time it is assisted by an electric motor, which generates a maximum of 194 bhp and 280 Nm on its own. They produce a total of 717  bhp and 1,000 Nm of torque.
