Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, has commenced the delivery of the Armado, an Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV), to the Indian armed forces. Developed and designed by Mahindra, the Armado offers versatile capabilities to meet various operational requirements.
The Armado is a modular vehicle that can be easily upgraded or configured for different operational roles, as highlighted by MDS. With ballistic protection of up to B7, Stanag Level II, the Armado is designed to provide enhanced security in high-risk environments.
One of the key applications of the Armado is in counter-terrorist operations, including patrolling in high-intensity areas, special forces operations, and quick reaction teams. Its adaptability also allows it to serve as a weapon carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, border security vehicle, or be deployed in open or desert terrains during raids.
Powering the Armado is a robust 3.2-litre turbocharged, direct-injection diesel engine, capable of generating 215 horsepower and 500 Newton-meters of torque. The vehicle features a 4-speed automatic gearbox that distributes power to all four wheels. With a top speed exceeding 120 kilometers per hour and an acceleration of 0 to 60 kilometers per hour in 12 seconds, the Armado demonstrates commendable performance. Additionally, it boasts a payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms.
The Armado comes equipped with Bilstein independent suspension for enhanced off-road capabilities and is fitted with 318/80 R17 tires. These specially designed tires have the ability to run even when punctured or without air for up to 50 kilometers. Notably, the vehicle features a centralized tire inflation system for added convenience. Furthermore, the Armado offers a power steering system and can be configured for either left-hand drive or right-hand drive, providing flexibility based on operational requirements.
Inside the Armado, there is ample seating for six passengers, including the driver, with the possibility of accommodating up to eight occupants. The vehicle’s interior features include a public address (PA) system, GPS navigation, automatic grenade launcher, electric winch, and HF/UHF/VHF radio communication. Moreover, the Armado incorporates a self-cleaning exhaust scavenging and air filtration system, ensuring optimal performance even in extremely dusty climates.
As Mahindra Defence Systems delivers the Armado to the Indian armed forces, it is expected to bolster their operational capabilities with its versatile design, powerful performance, and advanced features. The vehicle’s adaptability and robustness make it a valuable asset in various scenarios, further strengthening India’s defense infrastructure.
