Hyundai Motor has announced a major recall affecting approximately 145,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the US market due to a critical safety issue. The affected vehicles, including popular models like the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and various Genesis electric variants, may face a loss of drive power. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has flagged the issue, which could impact the safety and performance of these all-electric cars.

The recall impacts model years 2022-2025 of the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Genesis GV60, GV70, and G80 electrified variants. According to the NHTSA, the problem arises from integrated charging control units that can become damaged, preventing the 12-volt battery from charging properly. As a result, drivers could experience a loss of drive power, which could significantly impair the car’s performance and safety.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Genesis electric models from the 2022 to 2025 production years are the primary models affected by this recall. Specifically, the recall covers:

  • Ioniq 5 (2022-2025)
  • Ioniq 6 (2022-2025)
  • Genesis GV60 (2022-2025)
  • Genesis GV70 (2022-2025)

Hyundai dealers in the US will inspect the affected vehicles free of charge. If the issue is confirmed, owners will receive a software update, and a fuse replacement will be performed at no cost. This remedy is designed to prevent further damage to the charging control unit and restore the proper functioning of the vehicle’s 12-volt battery system.
