BYD has launched its new Shark pickup vehicle in Mexico. The Shark is BYD’s first pickup truck, equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The name ‘Shark’ is in line with BYD’s ‘Ocean Series’ range of vehicles, which also includes the Seal hatchback, Seal U SUV and Seal sedan.
BYD Shark PHEV Features
On the outside, the BYD Shark looks like a standard double-cab pickup truck, but with some aggressive style features, such as a large BYD emblem up front. It has C-shaped LED DRLs joined by a light bar. On the tailgate, a debossed BYD logo is added.
Two digital displays are installed inside the pickup truck’s cabin: a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch instrument panel. The dashboard has vertical AC vents on the sides and open storage space, with the rear AC vents located below the infotainment screen in the centre tunnel.
The BYD Shark is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a plug-in hybrid technology known as DMO (dual-mode off-road), which produces a total of 435 horsepower. The PHEV powertrain is expected to be optimized for off-road performance. BYD claims that the Shark pickup truck can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 5.7 seconds.
It can drive 100 km on electricity alone and a charge of 30-80% takes around 20 minutes. The body-on-frame truck can tow 2,500 kg and has a payload capacity of 835 kg. It features independent front and rear suspension.
