BMW and the California-based robotics company Figure have partnered to explore the possibilities of humanoid robots in the automobile industry. At its Spartanburg assembly factory, the German carmaker recently tested a humanoid robot named Figure 02.
The goal of the test was to evaluate the robot’s ability for subassembly tasks, particularly the insertion of sheet metal parts into fixtures. BMW engineers were impressed with Figure 02’s accuracy, dexterity and ability to fit in with its surroundings.
Although the trial’s outcomes were positive, BMW made clear that the introduction of humanoid robots into its manufacturing process is still in its testing stages. Right now, the carmaker is collaborating with Figure to collect data and improve the technology.
Milan Nedeljkovic, a member of BMW’s production management board stated, “The developments in the field of robotics are very promising. With an early test operation, we are now determining possible applications for humanoid robots in production. We want to accompany this technology from development to industrialization.”
The long-term goal is to use humanoid robots to perform activities that are considered too physically or ergonomically demanding for humans.
