BMW has recalled more than 291,000 X3 SUVs in the United States due to a defective interior cargo rail, which might detach in the case of a rear collision, increasing the risk of harm. The recall affects some BMW X3 SUVs built between 2018 and 2023.
The German luxury automobile maker stated in official recall documents submitted to the US safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that dealers will repair the rear luggage rail bolts that attach to the vehicle body.
The automaker claims that an intense collision involving an impacted SUV in August 2022 made them aware of the problem. The carmaker, however, has not disclosed if anyone was hurt in the collision.
The NHTSA stated that some BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i and X3 models made between 2018 and 2023 are affected by the most recent recall. A rear cargo rail installed on the car roof of these affected cars could suffer damage in a severe rear collision and cause the rail to detach. Beginning on August 30, the automaker intends to reach affected X3 SUV customers and dealers will provide free rear cargo rail replacements.
