Samir Modi, a member of the well-known Modi family and younger brother of businessman Lalit Modi, has been arrested in Delhi on rape charges dating back several years, according to Delhi Police sources. He was detained at the airport upon his return from abroad and remanded to police custody by a local court.
Samir Modi has been part of the senior management at Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. (GPI), one of India’s largest tobacco companies, where he served as an Executive Director. He played a significant role in the group’s expansion into diverse sectors, including retail, cosmetics, and lifestyle businesses under the Modi Enterprises umbrella.
The arrest adds another layer of controversy around the Modi family. His elder brother, Lalit Modi, the founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been residing abroad and is wanted in India in connection with cases of financial irregularities.
Police have not disclosed further details about the allegations against Samir Modi or the next steps in the investigation.
