Bharti Enterprises founder and chairman Sunil Mittal was conferred with the prestigious Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) on Saturday. The telecom industry veteran received the insignia at a special investiture ceremony held at the British High Commissioner’s residence in New Delhi, in the presence of friends and family.
The honorary knighthood, approved by King Charles III, was announced in 2024 in recognition of Mittal’s significant contributions to strengthening UK-India business relations.
Expressing gratitude for the honour, Mittal stated, “As India and the United Kingdom continue to achieve remarkable milestones in bilateral relations, I acknowledge this recognition both as a privilege and a responsibility. I remain committed to working with stakeholders in both nations to further enhance business ties.”
Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, described Mittal as a close friend of the UK, citing his significant investments in BT, Gleneagles, Norlake Hospitality, and OneWeb. She praised his leadership in fostering economic collaboration and highlighted his role in the India-UK CEO Forum.
Recently, Mittal led a senior Indian business delegation to the UK, engaging with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Foreign Secretary, and other Cabinet Ministers to explore new avenues for economic growth between the two nations.
