Following the sad news of Ratan Tata’s passing on October 9, 2024, tributes have poured in from all corners of society. Tata, who was 86 years old, was admitted to a Mumbai hospital after experiencing health complications. His passing marks the end of an era for Indian business and philanthropy.
In a joint family statement, his stepmother, Simone Tata, expressed, “While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity, and purpose will continue to inspire future generations.” The Tata family, including his brothers Jimmy and Noel Tata, also shared that they take comfort in the outpouring of love and respect from all those who admired him.

Ratan Tata had recently reassured the public that rumors about his health were unfounded, mentioning that he was undergoing routine medical checkups due to his age. In a post on October 7, he wrote, “I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age and related medical conditions.” However, his condition worsened after experiencing sinking spells over the weekend, leading to his hospitalization and, eventually, his peaceful passing.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, praised Tata’s lasting contributions to the Tata Group and beyond, calling him a “mentor, guide, and friend.” The Tata Group expanded globally under his leadership, making key acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley, while always staying rooted in integrity and philanthropy.
Sidharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, also expressed deep sadness, stating, “While we will miss his physical presence, he will always live in our hearts and minds. We rededicate ourselves to carrying forward his legacy.”
Tata’s passing has evoked an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, business figures, and ordinary citizens, all acknowledging the immense impact of his life’s work.
