
John McAfee, founder of McAfee found dead in his prison cell in Brians 2 penitentiary near Barcelona. A spokeswoman for the prison system in the northeastern Catalonia region said that he apparently died from suicide. No further details were provided by her.
He was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 and has been in jail in Spain ever since. He was about to board a flight to Istanbul before getting arrested.
Shortly after a court gave approval to John McAfee for extradition to the United States, he died by alleged suicide on Wednesday. He was wanted for tax evasion in the United Nations.
Antivirus software pioneer, McAfee is alleged to have deliberately failed to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018. He did not file tax returns even after earning earning millions from consulting work, cryptocurrencies and selling the rights to his life story.
McAfee earned more than 10 million euros ($12 million) in the four years in question ( between 2014 and 2018). He never filed a tax return, according to the US extradition request filed in November and quoted in the ruling.
The 75-year-old if convicted, could have faced up to 30 years in prison.
Earlier on Wednesday, Spain’s National Court had approved his extradition to the United States. The decision would also have needed approval from the Spanish cabinet.
