Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has weighed in on the rising geopolitical and trade tensions facing India, particularly in light of the recent tariff hike imposed by the United States. In a powerful post on X (formerly Twitter), Goyal issued a rallying call for India to take charge of its future and assert itself as a global superpower.
“Every few years, the world reminds us of our place. A threat here, a tariff there. But the message is the same: stay in your lane, India,” he wrote.
“Global powers will always bully us, unless we take our destiny in our own hands. And the only way to do that is if we collectively decide to become the world’s largest most unapologetic superpower in the world. In economy, in technology, in defense, and most importantly, in ambition. There is absolutely no other way.”
Goyal’s comments come amid a surge in nationalist sentiment and strategic concerns after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports. The decision, justified on grounds of national security and India’s continued import of Russian oil, has sparked intense debate across economic and political circles.

His statement echoes a growing belief among Indian entrepreneurs and policymakers that India must no longer be content with incremental progress. With global dynamics rapidly shifting, there is mounting pressure for India to accelerate its growth across sectors — from defense manufacturing and AI to infrastructure and global trade.
Goyal, known for building one of India’s most successful tech companies, has often spoken about ambition and scale. His latest post struck a chord online, quickly gaining traction among startup founders, venture capitalists, and citizens resonating with the idea of India’s assertive rise.
As global powers continue to enforce protectionist policies, voices like Goyal’s are shaping a new narrative: India should no longer wait to be included — it must lead on its own terms.
