Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Tuesday lamented the alarming scenario of Indian media houses, saying independent journalism is the backbone of democracy.
Speaking to an audience at the presentation of Sri Gulab Chand Kothari’s book. “The Gita Vijnana Upanishad”. The CJI stated that it is the responsibility of media houses to present facts, especially in the Indian social scenario. “People still believe that whatever is printed is true,” he said.
He further asserted that the only media houses without any business baggage were able to fight. For democracy during the dark days of emergency.
CJI Ramana mentioned the importance of press freedom. It is both a symptom of and a contributor to the breakdown of other democratic institutions and principles, a fact that makes it especially alarming.
“The true nature of media houses will certainly be assessed from time to time & appropriate conclusions will be drawn from their conduct during testing times,” said CJI NV Ramana.
Additionally, Justice Ramana stated, “All I want to say is that the media must confine itself to honest journalism without using it as a tool to expand its influence and business interests.”
Days prior to his most recent comments, the Chief Justice had criticised electronic. And social media “trials,” calling them “kangaroo courts” that sometimes make it difficult. For even seasoned judges to make decisions.
Ramana emphasised the significance of judicial review in protecting the Constitution. The need to establish effective judicial infrastructure. The issues caused by media trials in judicial administration, and future challenges facing the judiciary.
