India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, held a crucial bilateral meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi during the latter’s official visit to New Delhi. The discussions took place against the backdrop of a recent terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir and India’s subsequent counter-response.
Addressing the media after the meeting, EAM Jaishankar remarked, “You are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric attack on 22nd April in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This attack compelled us to respond on 7th May by striking at the cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our response was targeted and measured.”

He further emphasized India’s stance on national security, stating, “It is not our intention to escalate the situation. However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very, very firm response.”
The high-level dialogue highlighted the strategic partnership between India and Iran and reflected mutual interests in maintaining regional stability. Dr. Jaishankar underlined the importance of shared understanding, especially in times of heightened security concerns. “As a neighbour and close partner, it is important that you have a good understanding of the situation,” he said.
