In a tragic turn of events, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ziauddin Siddique, popularly known as Baba Siddique, was shot dead on October 12, 2024, during a political rally in Mumbai’s Bandra East. Siddique, aged 66, sustained serious injuries after being shot by two assailants and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a few hours later. Who Was Baba Siddique?
Ziauddin Siddique, better known as Baba Siddique, began his political career at a young age, joining the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1977 as a member of the National Students Union of India. His rise in politics was swift, becoming the General Secretary of the Bandra Youth Congress in 1980 and its President by 1982. Siddique’s dedication to public service and his strong local presence in Bandra earned him the trust of his community, and in 1999, he was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Bandra West constituency. He served three consecutive terms as MLA, being re-elected in 2004 and 2009.
During his political career, Siddique held several significant positions, including Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Maharashtra government. He also served as Chairman of the MHADA Mumbai Board, where he oversaw numerous housing and urban development projects.
In February 2024, Siddique made headlines again when he left the Congress Party to join the NCP under the leadership of Ajit Pawar. His son, Zeeshan Siddique, is currently serving as the MLA for Bandra East, continuing the family’s political legacy.
