On Saturday, the Congress high command recently named party leader Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu as the new chief minister of Himachal Pradesh. Newly elected Congress MLAs convened on Saturday evening for a second encounter in 24 hours as the party works to choose a consensus candidate for the position of chief minister amidst frenetic lobbying by aspirants.
On Sunday, the new chief minister is most likely to take the oath.
Five things to know about Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu:
- Former president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee and four-term legislator Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu is considered as close to Rahul Gandhi.
- Sukhu, who hails from Nadaun in the Himachal Pradesh region of Hamirpur, joined the National Student Union of India (NSUI), the party’s student arm, during his college years.
- From 1998 to 2008, Sukhu presided over the state Youth Congress. In 2013, he was chosen to serve as the committee’s president for the Himachal Pradesh Congress.
- He is a representative for the Nadaun assembly seat in the 13th Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Vijay Agnihotri preceded him in 2017.
- Following the victory of the Congress in the assembly elections on Thursday, Sukhu has become one of the candidates for the position of chief minister in Himachal Pradesh.
On November 12, the hill state had its assembly elections, and the results were announced on Thursday. As the BJP won 25 seats, the Congress rejoiced its significant victory by winning 40 seats.
