Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared two days of statewide mourning, today and tomorrow, following the deaths of more than 80 individuals in a landslide in Wayanad.
The Kerala Revenue Minister’s office disclosed that the death toll from the Wayanad landslide incident has risen to 84, with 116 injuries reported so far.
In the meantime, the Indian Army column arrived at the landslide scene in Chooralmala at noon. Soldiers are being transported across the flooded river by ropes to help and carry out rescue attempts in Chooralmala Ward No. 10.
George Kurian, the Union Minister of State, is heading to Wayanad to monitor rescue and relief operations. The minister will interact with members of the National Disaster Relief Force, paramilitary forces, Kerala government officials and other agencies involved in the operation on directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kerala Forest Minister Saseendran visited the devastated region to inspect the damage and organize swift response efforts. State Minister Ramachandran Kadannappalli is scheduled to join the operations on the ground.
Also, a delegation of state ministers from the Revenue, Public Works, and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Departments have taken flight from Thiruvananthapuram and is anticipated to arrive shortly, according to the Kerala chief minister’s office.
