The death toll from the series of landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district increased to 148, with hundreds injured and trapped. Landslides destroyed homes and roads, uprooted trees and caused water bodies to rise. Using every resource at hand, efforts are still being made to locate and rescue the missing people.

The rescue operations include personnel from the fire and rescue, civil defence, NDRF and local emergency response teams, according to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). There are also about 200 Indian Army personnel present from DSC Centre Kannur and 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode. A Mi-17 and an ALH helicopter from the Air Force are also assisting in the rescue operations.

Nearly 120 rescued and injured people are being treated in various Wayanad hospitals.

On Wednesday, July 31, all educational institutions will be closed due to the disaster and constant rainfall. 11 districts, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, have also announced holidays, according to Onmanorama.
