A series of massive landslides hit numerous hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district early Tuesday, killing at least 24 people.
The landslides happened between 2 and 4 a.m., especially affecting the Mundakai and Chooralmala areas. The landslides have caused major destruction and emergency services are facing difficulty in reaching the affected areas.
“We are trying every possible thing to rescue our people. We have received 24 bodies in different hospitals. Around 70 people are also injured. We have ensured proper treatment of the injured,” Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters, as per ANI News.
Out of five, four dead bodies were taken to the Meppadi CHC, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, while more than fifty injured patients were admitted to different hospitals. “We have received five bodies, but hundreds of people are trapped under the mud. Rescue operations are in and we are trying to save all the lives More than 50 injured in different hospitals and four bodies have reached Meppadi CHC .”
The Health Minister stated that rescue teams are presently unable to reach the Mundakai landslide site because of blocked roads and dangerous terrain, raising concerns that hundreds of people may be trapped. “It is very difficult for the rescue workers to reach Mundakai but they are trying. In Mundakai area hundreds of people are trapped,” said Veena George.
