In a bold statement that could reshape India-US trade dynamics, US President Donald Trump claimed that India has agreed to eliminate all tariffs on American imports. “They’ll drop it to nothing,” Trump said during a White House media interaction, adding that such a deal would never have happened “for anybody but me.”

Trump, speaking alongside Canada’s Mark Carney, pointed out that “India has the highest tariffs in the world,” and emphasized that the US was “not going to put up with that.” He claimed that following recent tariff escalations, India had already agreed to his demand of removing duties entirely on American goods.

The announcement comes weeks after Trump introduced a sweeping 26% tariff on almost all US trading partners—including India—as part of his “Liberation Day” trade overhaul. That rate was recently lowered to a flat 10% for a 90-day pause, with China being the sole exception facing a 145% duty.

Although details of the trade deal are yet to be made public, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed ongoing negotiations with 17 of the country’s 18 key trading partners. He has previously stated that India’s deal could be among the first finalized.

The India-US trade deal has long been in the works, with a near-final agreement falling through in 2019 during Trump’s visit to India. Negotiations remained dormant under the Biden administration.
