Manoj Soni, the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has resigned due to personal reasons, nearly five years before the completion of his term, according to ANI.

Soni, who took office on May 16, 2023, submitted his resignation to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). As of now, his resignation has not been accepted. Soni’s tenure as UPSC Chairman was expected to last until May 2028.

Before his appointment, Soni had a distinguished career in academia, serving three terms as Vice-Chancellor at universities in Gujarat before joining the UPSC as a member in June 2017.

In a separate development, the UPSC has filed an FIR against 34-year-old IAS probationer Puja Khedkar. Khedkar faces allegations of using fraudulent means to pass her civil services exam. She is accused of misrepresenting herself under the physical disabilities and OBC categories to gain an advantage. The FIR was registered on July 19, 2024, for “faking identity.”
