Tehelka sting operation: Jaya Jaitly & 2 others sentenced to 4 years in prison for corruption. On Thursday a Delhi court sentenced former Samata Party leader Jaya Jaitly and two others to four years in jail in connection with the investigation of the news journal Tehelka – Operation West End – on suspected corruption related to defense deal.

Ms. Jaitly, her former party associate Gopal Pacherwal, and Maj. Gen. S.P. Murgai (retd.) were previously accused of conspiracy and misconduct in criminal matters.

The three were sentenced pursuant to section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, and including section 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC) (Taking reward for expressing personal power with public official).

Reporters in the sting operation were acting as agents of a fictitious international weapons corporation. They gave Indian Army the selling of thermal cameras and other devices.

The concealed cameras documented their activities and the payoffs the politicians and army officials took.

During the undercover operation multiple charging papers were submitted by the CBI. Other convicted also include Jaitly, Murgai and Pacherwal, Laxman, Narender Singh, associate financial adviser to the defense ministry, and R.K., treasurer to the Samata Party, R.K. Jain.

In following undercover operation, Ms. Jaitly received money as a payoff from Mathew Samuel, and even the former Major General took about ₹20000.
