Activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody by Leh Police on Friday during ongoing protests in Ladakh. The demonstrations, which have turned violent, have sadly resulted in at least four deaths and left over 90 people injured.

The protests, led by Wangchuk along with the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, aim to push for full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which provides special protections for certain regions.

As part of his campaign, Wangchuk had begun a hunger strike on September 10, 2025. He ended the fast after 15 days on September 24, citing concerns over the rising violence in the region.

The situation in Ladakh remains tense, with authorities working to restore peace while activists continue to voice their demands.
