Supreme court has adjourned Bhushan’s 2009 contempt case to 12th October. The apex body has sought the attorney general’s assistance in the matter as to look into larger issues involved in contempt cases with respect to procedures and situations
The case is in relation to an interview that Bhushan gave to news magazine Tehelka in 2009. The apex court issued contempt notices to Bhushan and magazine editor Tarun Tejpal for allegedly denouncing some sitting and former top court judges in the interview.
Bhushan had made allegations against former chief justices of India S.H. Kapadia and K.G. Balakrishnan, besides giving controversial remarks against the judiciary.
On 25th August, the apex body had said that a new bench will deal with certain larger questions related to freedom of speech and levelling of corruption charges against the judiciary.
Earlier, Lawyer & Activist, Bhushan had already been found guilty of criminal contempt in a case which pertained to two tweets posted by Bhushan criticising CJIs, including Chief Justice SA Bobde. Bhushan was fined Rs.1 as punishment.
