Voting has begun for the Vice Presidential Election 2025. The results are scheduled to be declared after 6 pm today.
NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan vs INDIA bloc’s B Sudershan Reddy
The BJP-led NDA has named Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate, while the opposition-backed INDIA bloc has fielded former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
SAD likely to abstain, BJD and BRS also stay away
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is likely to abstain from voting, party sources indicated. Earlier, both the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) also decided to abstain from the election for the country’s second-highest constitutional office.
Electoral college math
In the Vice Presidential elections, MPs from both Houses vote via a secret ballot under a proportional representation system using the single transferable vote method.
The electoral college has 781 MPs, with the majority mark set at 391. The NDA has 425 MPs, while the opposition bloc commands support of 324 MPs, making Radhakrishnan’s victory almost certain.
