S. Phangnon Konyak, the first woman from Nagaland to serve in the Rajya Sabha, presided over the House today. She made history earlier on July 17, 2023, when she was appointed as the first woman from Nagaland to the panel of vice presidents. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar this week nominated four women members—50% of the total strength—to the panel of vice-chairmen in an impressive effort to achieve gender balance.

Additionally significant is the fact that all of the women who were nominated for the panel had recently been elected as MPs. Eight people make up the newly formed panel ahead of the monsoon session, with half of them being female. For the first time in the Upper House’s history, female members of the panel of vice speakers have equal representation.
