Daylight loot of a whopping Rs 1.20 crore at this divisional headquarters was solved within a space of a mere four hours on Monday and the amount recovered by Madhya Pradesh Police.

Two of the accused are in the law-enforcement net while a third is absconding.

Furnishing details, SSP Amit Sanghi and Addl SP Rajesh Dandotiya said that bookkeeper Sunil Sharma and driver Pramod Gurjar left a trading company’s DD Nagar office with a sum of Rs 1.50 cr and headed for a Bank of Baroda branch. The duo crossed Phoolbagh and Chhapparwala Bridge. They were driving along a narrow lane located beside Rajiv Plaza when a masked motorcycle-borne youth waved the car to a halt and brandished a country-made firearm at Sharma whose cellular phone – plus that of the driver – were snatched. An accomplice opened the boot and made off with cartons containing Rs 1.20 cr. The victims later alerted the bank manager and a guard; the former contacted the police.

Gurjar’s statement was inconsistent with CCTV footage and sustained questioning made him break down. He confessed that his friend and a relative were involved. The money, a .315-bore gun and cartridges were appropriated at the address of one of the perpetrators. Their plan was to share the amount tonight at a hotel in Maharajpura.
