RAPIDX, India’s first regional train service, will begin operations later this month: Report

This month, RAPIDX, India’s first regional train service, will begin operations on a 17-kilometer portion. According to The Economic Times, the five stations along the line are Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and the Duhai Depot. “Work at all of these stations has been completed, and they are ready for operations,” a senior government official told the business daily.

This stretch is part of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Project. Trains on the RRTS are expected to reach a top speed of 160 kmph. Along with the priority segment, a 42-kilometer viaduct connecting Sahibabad and Meerut South Station has been built.

“The next station to be commissioned after the priority section will be a 25-kilometer-long section after Duhai Depot comprising Muradnagar, Modi Nagar South, Modi Nagar North, and Meerut South,” the business daily reported an official as saying.

The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System commenced construction in June 2019. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is building the RRTS corridor, hopes to open the full 82-kilometer stretch between Delhi and Ghaziabad, as well as Metro services in Meerut, to the public by 2025.

The project is expected to cost Rs 30,274 crore. The project is being co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the New Development Bank (NDB). Every RAPIDX train will have a designated women’s coach. “Moving in the direction of Meerut from Delhi, the women’s coach will be the second coach of the train set, just after the premium coach.” While travelling to Delhi from Meerut, it will be the train’s second last coach, right before the luxury coach,” according to a PTI report.

The reserved women’s coach will seat 72 people. Every station will also feature a diaper-changing area. Proper signs will also be installed to identify these coaches at the platform level and at the train door openings. The trains were given the moniker RAPIDX since it is easy to read and speak in a variety of languages. “The X in the name denotes next generation technology and the new-age mobility solution, as well as speed and progress.” “It also represents youth, optimism, and energy,” NCRTC officials added.

The NCRTC, a joint venture business of the Centre and the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, is developing the semi-high speed regional rail service across the National Capital Region (NCR).
